Rajah Chelliah Passes Away

Padma Vibhushan Rajah Chelliah passes away. Known for his contributions in the fiscal policy after post liberalisation era, Rajah Chelliah was not conferred with any of the government honourary medals until 2007 when Manmohan Singh proposed his name to the committee in recognition of his services. The committee decided for Padma Shri but later Manmohan Singh elevated to Padma Vibhushan owing to senior age of Rajah Chelliah, one step below Bharat Ratna.

Though not conferred with Bharat Ratna, Rajah Chelliah is indeed a Jewel of India for the contributions he had made in the field of Finance and Economics.

Manmohan Singh and my world of Sikh associations

In my world of Sikh associations, Sikh people are vivacious, down to earth, fun lovers and hard workers. They are successful businessmen, mediators in any quarrels on issues that do not perturb them and winning warriors on issues that they associate with. We can talk of warrior skills of Sikhs in Anglo Sikhs war or in the World Wars. History has given them their deserving place for their battlefront skills.

What intrigues me are as follows:

1. How come Manmohan Singh looks so calm and sober?
2. How did he go for Ph.D in economics ? I am not questioning the intellectual spirit. Sikhs are usually administrators or businessmen than being academicians.
3. Sikhs are sincere followers of their Guru. Does this make Manmohan being loyal to Sonia ?
4. IK Gujral, a punjabi, contested elections from Jallandhar in 1998 with the support of Akali Dal ( a Sikh Party) which was in NDA. Quoting from wiki,

The Akali Dal, though a part of BJP-led coalition, opted to support Gujral because during his Prime Ministerial tenure, Gujral declared that the central government will share the expenses on stamping out terrorism in Punjab during 1980s and early 1990s, along with the state government of Punjab. That eased the strain on economy of Punjab to a great extent and the Akali Dal decided to support Gujral. Gujral defeated Umrao Singh of the Congress Party by over 131,000 votes.

How can our Prime Minister take a back door from Rajya Sabha ? Should he not be elected by people though he is nominated by the party? Should he not stand in Sikh constituency and get elected ? Why should he get short cut route from Assam?

If Shiv Sena can support the below par President Prathiba Patil for her Marathi credentials and even support the corrupt Sharad Pawar for being PM, why not the Sikhs and Punjabi's support Manmohan Singh, to contest from Punjab?

5. The last, as I quoted in my previous blog, he could have done something more to assuage the Sikhs who were badly hit in 1984 riots.

December 2008: Iraqi journalist Muntadher al-Zaidi threw his shoes at George Bush. He was sentenced to three years in jail for his crime.

February 2009: Protestor throws shoe at Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao at Cambridge University

April 2009 : Jarnail Singh throws shoe at P.Chidambaram (Home Minister).

The issues that do not bother me for my todays objective reasoning are as follows:

1. Does P.Chidambaram deserve this act?
2. Is Jagdish Tytler culpabable for 1984 riots?
3. Is CBI, just a mere player to the interests of few and is not trustworthy?
5. Is Indira Gandhi's assassination right or wrong?
6. Should the entire Sikhs be punished for a mistake of few?
7. Is your loyalty factor for a leader blind your reasoning?

The issues that outrage me are as follows:

1. In 1984, the riots happened. Why on earth that CBI could not complete investigation till 2009? Were they awaiting for silver jubilee of 25 years?
2. Justice Delayed is Justice Denied.
3. Why should CBI let off Jagdish Tytler just before the elections ? Do Congress want to nominate Jagdish Tytler for his Delhi Constituency?
4. Varun is put in Jail under NSA for his acrimonious rhetoric. I object his rhetoric. But what did these secular people do for Jagdish Tytler? Ministries and other portfolios in the Union government. Well, people could call the same with Narendra Modi or any other politician. Yes, few are fortunate and few are not.
5. The last and the utmost irritating thing, Manmohan Singh, a Sikh could let go off this shame under his leadership.

Federer's loss

Miami ATP tournament, Federer could not control the wind and his emotions. In the rare display of emotions on the center court, Federer broke his racquet by hitting on the ground when he could not volley a simple ball hit by Djokovic to his backhand. There were continuous spate of errors and eventually conceding the match to Djokovic in the semifinals of the tournament. Inclusing this this defeat, Federer has lost one match to Nadal, two matches to Murray and one match to Djokovic. In 2009, he has lost to 1, 3 and 4 ATP rank players.

The long lasting question still haunts. Does Federer need a coach ? Yes, he needs to bolster his confidence and plan for strategies against top ranked players. He just needs some amount of counselling and planning to improve his game.

While I was thinking of John McEnroe on Friday, it was interesting to find McEnroe himself offered his services for Federer. Did you guys remember the speech of Nadal when he trounced Federer in his den, the grass courts of Wimbledon? Thanks John, for playing some volleys with me before the Finals. He has tipped Nadal to trounce Federer then and now he has offered to trounce Nadal by helping Federer.

Whatever it is, if Federer is coached by McEnroe or anyone, it will be interesting to witness another magnum opus in tennis ?

Is Law immoral ?

Down below are the two newsposts on recent court orders. In one instance the court has rejected the idea of sporting beards in Schools in the name of religion. In the other instance the court has approved a girl's request to be in "Live in Relationship".

Law is blind to traditions and religious beliefs but gives towering importance to individuals rights. Is Live in Relationship, a moral thing in society and sporting beard is anti-institutional ? I find it to be very ironical.

Rejecting the plea of a Muslim student that he should be permitted to sport beard in his convent school, the Supreme Court observed secularism cannot be overstretched and that "Talibanisation" of the country cannot be permitted. The division bench of Justice Ashok Parihar and justice G S Saraf disapproved the tendency of live-in relationships but allowed the girl to go where ever she wanted with police protection. In his observation, Justice Parihar said, "these live-in relationships are not going to help the youngsters and are hardly tenable in Indian society but what can be done if a major girl does not want to go with any of her relatives. She is not detained against her will in this case. Therefore, we cannot allow her parents to seek custody."

Sanjay Dutt - KhalNayak or Gandhigiri. A contradicting personallity. An aide in Mumbai blast and now a leader to contest in Loksabha polls. Samjawadi party has got one of the many criterias is that a leader in elections should atleast have a criminal background. Many of its candidates have got notorious pasts. It came as no surprise to anyone when the party announced Sanjay Dutt as its candidate. Sanjay Dutt has dubious qualification of criminal past and proximity with Amar Singh.

The Supreme Court in its judgement quashed his file telling that his case cannot be suspended to enable him contest elections. As an electoral law, a person with atleast 2 years of imprisonment for criminal offence is barred from running elections. If final verdict of Sanjay Dutt confirms the Mumbai Anti Terror Court order of 6 years imprisonment, then it means a blow to Sanjay Dutt's political career.

Why am I against Sanjay Dutt ?

A leader has to work for the people and should not work against the people. He may be corrupt, immoral and so on but he should not have any notorious pasts. Sanjay Dutt has aided the terror groups and has worked against his own Mumbaikars who had / have idolised him. Also film stars should not get free access to Politics. We have so many film stars who have entered politics. Yes, I am against many of them.

Every sinner has a future and every saint has a past. I would completely support Sanjay Dutt if he wants to become a saint but will vehemently oppose if he wants to have future in Indian political arena.

Shashi Tharoor - Chances of Foreign Minister

If Congress comes back to power, will Shashi Tharoor be given External Affairs ? Looking at his resume and work experience, anyone could blindly put him to that portfolio.

But what will Congress thinktank do? Congress would not want such highly qualified person for that position. Shashi Tharoor, himself brings so much of knowledge and experience that he can independenly steer the policy going against the interests of the party. He would not be in consultative mood with other cabinet ministers. Is he a trust worthy of Sonia ? All these factors would come in play for him to get that position.

Kapil Sibal an eminent lawyer was asked to handle Science and Technology. Jairam Ramesh, a brilliant strategist for Congress, IIT alma mater, Ph.D from Carnegie Mellon, was asked to handle Textiles. Shivraj Patil was given Home Ministry. Manmohan Singh, a brilliant economist and hardcore finance person, was asked to handle Prime Ministership portfolio. Looking at the above citations, one can easily infer that in Congress, right persons get the wrong job. By virtue of being in Congress, I am sure that Shashi Tharoor would not handle External Affairs or become Foregin Minister of India.

If Shashi Tharoor wins, he can get a ministry or atleast a MoS portfolio. He may also tend to get benefitted, even if he lose, from Kerala squabbles given the internal bickerings in Kerala Congress. He may ultimately evolve as a consensus candidate from Kerala for a plum portfolio for Kerala in the Union. After all, every state should get a Cabinet berth or ministry in the Union.

The terrorists have attacked the police training center in Lahore and have also taken them as hostages.

The men who are supposed to protect the civilians have failed to protect their training center.

After all Policemen are also normal men. I am not sure how they are going to react when thet are taken as hostages. I think they would be better prepared than ordinary men as Policemen are made emotionally tougher.

What this leaves in Pakistan ? Will Kiyani do a Musharraf ?

Varun Gandhi, would have made the inflammatory speech, may be for 60 minutes during the election rally in Pilhibit. The news channel IBNLive, NDTV or Times Now (there could be more news channels) have made it as a repeated headlines in the last one week. We know how redundant their news items are, when they get a hot selling news items. These news channels have triggered even more hearts than what Varun did. They would have strengthened more Hindutva forces across India and have alienated more minority forces across India. Varun could only do in Pilhibit where as Press have taken it across India and Globe.

I strongly feel that there should be Censorship in the press too! There should be strong guidelines on the repeat telecast of newsitems.

Will Judiciary take cognizance of this issue and raise a suo motu case against Press?

Today I read the news that Mamta Banerjee would make West Bengal as London, Dighe as Goa and so on. She has not given any plans for tranformation. She has just spilled the grand plan. It is the same rhetoric with no solutions.

What is today's London ? Failing economy, unemployment, targets of terrorists and so on...It has its own problems....If you take any place in the globe, it has its own share of problems...Instead of transforming Bengal to London, why not make Bengal as a new Bengal....

Bring the new Bengal to the rostrum for her credit of bringing cultural and social renaissance in India...Bring the new Bengal to the rostrum for her contribution for Indian Independence....Bring the new Bengal to the rostrum for her contributions in art and religion...

Put the new Bengal in the development map by generating employment, improving the life conditions of people, stopping cross border infiltration etc...

Mamta has to solve the problems at the street level instead of envisioning an Utopian land...

If Karunanidhi (assuming that he was in power in West Bengal) reads this what he would reply ? There is no need for new Bengal as all achievements have already been made during his rule....

It wont be Indian Premier League anymore, if it is taken outside India.
The teams like Chennai Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders or Rajasthan Royals will not be appropriate as nomenclatures if they are going to fight in Pretoria or Surrey or Lords or Cape town?

If BJP accuses UPA of not holding sporting event in India, should Home Minister not clarify with technical difficulties. Ofcourse, there could be certain things that cannot be shared in public. Next Finance Minister

In the UPA led government, Chidambaram was the finance minister for the first four years and in the final year he was moved to the Home Ministry to replace Shivraj Patil. Manmohan Singh took control of Finance minstry before he was hospitalized for his surgery. At this moment, Pranab Mukherjee was made as the caretaker PM. In the final year budget / vote on account of UPA, Pranab Mukherjee was entrusted to finalize and deliver the budget.

My question is here, why was Chidambaram not asked to take control of Finance Ministry in the absence of Manmohan Singh ? My explanation is simple. He was there for four years and presenting a vote on account a.k.a populist budget is simple and staright forward.

The counter explanation to my question is, the care taker PM inherited all the portfolios that PM was entrusted with. Pranab Mukherjee has to deliver the budget as FM as a virtue of inheritance.

If this was the counter explanation, my next question is, when the global economy is shrinking and there is fear of recession, why there is no full time PM ? We all know that Pranab Mukherjee is overloaded with different tasks, why Finance Ministry was handed over to him?

The one person who will have answer to my question on full time Finance Minister is : Sonia Gandhi.

The next question is who will be the next finance minister after 2009 elections ?

If NDA forms the government, Arun Shourie or Jaswant Singh may become FM.

If UPA forms the government, Montek Singh Ahluwalia may become FM. This depends on whether Left joins UPA or not. If Left is there in UPA, things are difficult for Montek. If Left joins, may be Chidambaram would become the FM again.

If 3rd front emerges and left joins the government, then Asim Das Gupta may possibly become FM. I do not see any other distinguished person from the regional parties to handle the finance ministry.

There is also one more person who is capable of handling FM but noone will ever trust him. That is the curse of Dr.Subramanyan Swamy.

2009 may not be year for Raghuram Rajan but the days are soon for him to become FM of India. I assume that he still has the Indian Citizenship.

Sony Ericcson Miami 2009

The draw for Federer in Sony Ericcson 2009 looks favourable. Nadal and Murray are in the same part of the draw and they may likely to meet in the semifinals. For Federer, he has to win over Roddick and Djokovic in Quarterfinals and Semifinals respectively. Lets watch out for Federer in Miami hoping that he would reach finals of this tournament. As a loyal Federer fan, I would expect him to win the tournament but who knows.

Rough for Federer Fans

Losing to Nadal or Murray has become consistent to Federer. These two players are tremendous athletes and target consistently on Federer's single handed backhand. There are other aspects in both of Nadal and Murray's games that Federer could not capitalise advantage on. It is on their second serve. Federer does not seem to attack on their second serve and also unable to convert the break points on their serves.

Federer was unconquerable between 2004-2007. Since 2008, he has fallen many times to the likes of Nadal, Murray and Djokovic. These are new era of players that Federer needs to adjust his game a little bit. He needs a coach at this time to fine tune his game else it would be disappointing to see Federer losing again in semifinals or finals of any tournament.

NB: I write this blog in utter disgust after seeing Federer losing to Andy Murray in 2009 Indian Wells ATP 1000 tournament. This is Federer's fourth consecutive defeat to Andy Murray.

Naan Kadavul - National award and 2009 Oscar Foreign Film

Naan Kadavul is a brilliant Tamil movie which brings the troubles of beggars in real world into reel world. Pooja has played a role of Hamsavaani - an orphaned blind beggar. She moves you out completely, particularly in the climax. There are so many different characters who have done an excellent job. The weak link could however may be Arya. His voice and Sanskrit diction did not seem to go well. Interestingly, Vikram's Sanskrit diction in Anniyan was also unpalatable. Pooja deserves a National award for this movie or atleast a nomination. Will she get a nomination and an award ?

Pooja is born to Sinhalese Mother in Srilanka and has a father of Indian Origin. She is Indian but has also played roles in Sinhalese movies. She is also fluent in Sinhala along with Kannada and Tamil.

Our empty rhetoric Tamil Champion leaders may raise an objection to Pooja in getting an nomination or an award because of her Sinhala connection. It is going to be an interesting watch.

The next interesting question is whether Naan Kadavul would be a 2009 Oscar entry from India in foreign film category ? The film will definitely appeal to people in the West. One for simple reason is the old conception of people in West thinks that India is land of beggars and mystic people. This film is just about them. Also please note the waves created by Slum Dog Millionaire. Second, film fraternity in the West have worked in Third World countries in humanitarian issues and hence this movie would easily appeal to them.

2009 could be a year where we can draw West to our brilliant movies made in India. There could be some more brilliant movies that can take the place of Naan Kadavul but I would be really perturbed if they pick some worthless movie.

Out of Sight - Out of mind

In the 2009 election campaign in Andhra Pradesh, Telugy Desam has fielded Junior NTR (Grandson of NTR) as its star campaigner. It is interesting to watch Junior NTR dressed in NTR's wardrobe and mesmerising people. Maybe, in Andhra the charm of NTR is still working.

Interestingly, the same charm or nostalgic memories of past leaders do not play any role in Tamilnadu.

None in Tamilnadu remembers great leaders of Congress like Rajaji, Satyamurthy or Kamaraj. Even the Congress party member would hardly remember them. The Dravidian Movement that stormed Tamilnadu, its propounders like Periyar and Anna are hardly remembered. The photographs of these leaders can be seen in few of the DMK meetings. Nowadays, the DMK meetings are completely hoarded by Karunanidhi and his entire family. Anna is lucky that his photo is also seen in few of the ADMK meetings.

MGR who mesmerised the Tamilnadu in the tinsel world as well as in the political front is slowly evading in the memories. Most of his film songs had been used up in election battles and has become redundant for the election campaigns. Jayalalitha, in her meetings have the photographs of MGR in the backdrop. She is the torch bearer of ADMK and she is covered in full size for the cutouts and hoardings.

All of the past leaders of Tamilnadu just get faded away. Their portraits, ideals or philosophies are not a major crowd puller in Tamil Nadu. People forget them as time passes. Out of sight, out of mind is manifest here in Tamilnadu.

Where as in the neighbouring state, NTR is still ruling the roost.

Darren Cahill - A Friend or Foe to Federer?

It was ubiquitous when Darren Cahill resigned as Davis Cup Coach for Australian Tennis Team that he would become the coach for Federer. After one week of practice session in Dubai, both had called off the arrangement as Cahill prioritized his stay and proxmity with his family over travelling with Federer around the globe.

Darren Cahill, then joined the Adidas Player Development program in USA and will work with the Adidas sponsored players. Interestingly, Fernando Verdasco is Adidas Sponsored player and has been coached by Darren Cahill.

In the Quarterfinal match between Verdasco and Federer in the Indian Wells tournament, it was ineresting to see Darren Cahill in the support camp of Verdasco. Throughout the match, Cahill stayed calm and did not react much to Verdasco's hits or misses. Darren Cahill, once a friend and now a foe for Federer during the quaterfinal clash with Verdasco.

BJP was more foolish when they demanded more seats in Orissa despite their poor showing in the recently concluded local body elections.

To counter the loss of BJD, BJP has asked Narendra Modi to campaign in Orissa and gain more votes for BJP. Will Modi's charm work outside Deccan plateau?

Who gains ?

Congress. The rivalry between BJD and BJP will cut into each of their vote base. If Congress can atleast withold their traditional votes, then they can definitely improve their seat counts.

Advani could probably be the longest waiting Prime Minister. He finished second when he took the mantle as Deputy Prime Minister from 2002 to 2004. His age is 81 now and this election could virtually be his last chance to contest for Prime Ministership.

The chances of Advani becoming PM or NDA forming the government looks bleak. Lalu commenting on Advani that the stars in the horoscope of Advani do not indicate him becoming Prime Minister could well be prophetic.

BJP should rope in Narendra Modi as PM to make BJP / NDA chances brighter for 2009 elections. Sometimes certain individual's whims and fancies could bring down the entire team's performance and that is what Advani is precisely doing. He is spoiling the BJP / NDA chances of winning 2009 elections.

BJD has Left the Pyari BJP for the forthcoming elections. Why had BJD left BJP ? Because of Pyari Mohan Mohapatra. The brain behind the face of Naveen Patnaik. Why did he tie an alliance with Left (CPIM) ? To cover the mess in Kandhamal and other anti missionary activities. BJD and BJP fought local elections from opposite camps and BJD won elections with huge majority. It understands that it has its own might in Orissa. By aligning with Left, it can get its "Pseudo Secular" image and can also bring the revolutionaries of Bajrang Dal and others into the democratic process.

Did you read that Congress has almost finalized the seat sharing with Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and Samajwadi party in Uttar Pradesh. This is a shot in arm for Congress that can boost its chances in winning the 2009 Union elections. As we always know, there are no permanent friends or foes in politics. Post elections there could emerge new alliances and sever old alliances. TC could possibly go with NDA if Congress and its allies could not bring numbers to form the next government. The chances of SP going with NDA is bleak because of the pseudo secular idealogies. At this moment, Congress think tank is working very well in forming alliances.

In West Bengal, though it is a Red Bastion, the TC and Congress can significantly cut into Left's vote bank by cting Nandigram. In UP, it could possibly be BSP. I am wondering whether BJP and BSP can form an alliance. If BSP-BJP formed, then balance may tilt towards NDA.

The president mentioned the fact that we are entering the 60th year of our Republic. The sixtieth year, for an ancient civilisation, is a very auspicious year. I mean all ancient civilisations in the world have and we call it shashthi. And after this year is over, we call it shashthipoorthi, starting of another life, and another life means a new life. So, we are in that year, whether we follow policies which create a new life or whether we go back into the morass of the past lives. And that is why, when we want to talk about the creation of a new life, we need to understand what we are, because these acts of moral policing, these vigilante attacks, these acts of expression of a Hindutva-Taliban, this is something we cannot afford when we are going towards shashtipoorthi. That is why, when the question comes up that we will protect our culture, what is our culture? In my opinion, there cannot be any other country where we have such a rich mosaic, a rich diversified mixture of various cultures, religions and traditions, as we have in India. Jawaharlal Nehru, on the eve of India's independence, in the Discovery of India, evokes the example of a palimpsest – the palimpsest is an ancient tablet on which history is recorded and when the new victor comes, he erases the old history, and writes a new history. But when he erases, he does not completely erase it because it cannot be completely erased. Talking about Indian culture, he described India as "an ancient palimpsest on which layer upon layer of thought and reverie have been inscribed and yet, no succeeding layer had completely hidden or erased what had been written previously".

It is this richness that we have, and if anybody claims to be the sole custodian of this culture, it is something that cannot be permissible. You please go back to our Constitution in the 60th year of the Republic. What does Article 1 say? Article 1 says, "India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States." You remove 'that is Bharat'. The Constitution still retains the same contents but not the spirit. Why did we say 'that is Bharat'? See the Constituent Assembly debates. There were a lot of debates whether it should be Hindustan, whether it should be Hind, Bharat, etc., etc. Finally the Constituent Assembly, after the partition, after the communal riots that took place, by its wisdom chose Bharat because of its secular connotation. I want to urge you, what is the meaning of Bharat? Some say, it is the name of the son of Dushyant and Shakuntala who unified this land; some say, it has a vedic interpretation, the vedic origin of Bharat Rishi. But there is another very important interpretation. Bharat is the confluence of three themes -- Bha is for Bhavam, Ra is for Ragam and Tha is for Thalam. It is only when you have a Raga that uses the seven musical notes in various combinations, you create a melody. When that melody is accompanied by a rhythm Talam, you create a harmony and it is the expression of that harmony which is the character, that is the Bhavam, and that is India. India is the confluence of all these cultures; it is the confluence of all these notes; it is the confluence of all these rhythms and that is expressed in our character, which is Bharat. So, it is that character that we need to preserve. If that has to be strengthened, if that needs to be done, you require an alternative policy trajectory – an alternative to communalism, an alternative to the economic policies which need to be changed to be pro-people, an alternative which will keep the independence of our foreign policy and our dignity in the international community.

EC to CEC - Navin Chawla - Full throttle

When I read the headlines today, I found that President has rejected the current CEC recommendation to remove Navin Chawla from the post of Election Commission. Thats alright. Congress or UPA has raped completely the constitutional institutions. Do not ask whether the other political parties have raped or not ? Surely they would have or they had.

What BJP or NDA could do is that make this as an electoral issue. Instead of using terrorism or Hinduva as its same poll rhetoric, they could emote this issue and evoke sympathy. What they could tell people is that Navin Chawla would play to the interests of UPA or Congress party in arranging or conducting "UNFAIR and BIAS" election and BJP or NDA would need the support of people to give them the chance to cleanse nepotisms in these, more than divine, institutions. BJP or NDA would change the old corrupt ways of doing things. Does it sound like Barack Obama's change?

I have a precedence for my reasoning of asking BJP or NDA to make this a poll issue. MGR went directly to people in the Tamilnadu elections of 1980 when DMK and Congress joined hands to dismiss ADMK government. MGR, such a charismatic leader who enticed the entire state of Tamilnadu with his charm, asked people what mistake did he commit for his government be dismissed by the Union ? He portrayed the correct or popular things that his government did for Tamilnadu. The sympathy over the dismissal of his government , education of people on the core issues for the election and vindication to all of his government actions resulted him coming back to power with even more strength.

I am not sure whether MGR to Tamilnadu would be same as Advani to India ? But I am sure that going to the people with clearly spelling out the issues like this would educate people correctly on the issues and would enable them to make a more clearer and practical decision. In this Election Commission issue, I personally think BJP or NDA can garner more advantage if they correctly formulate and execute the strategy.

During the Vajpayee rule in 1996, I asked my thatha (grand father) and appa (Dad) over our reading of Hindu Newspaper with filter coffee that whether Manmohan Singh would become the finance minister of this Vajpayee government ? My question was straight forward that able men should be given the plum portfolios cutting acorss the party lines. My family taught me that bipartisanship has got no room in politics and governance. In 2009, US President Barack Obama nominated Judd Gregg, a Republican party Senator, as his commerce secretary. Barack Obama, true to his electoral promises displayed the rare sense of bipartisanship among politicans by nominating Republican candidate for a critical portfolio amidst the economic crisis. However, Gregg withdrew his name from the nomination. The reason for his withdrawal are cited as removal of United States Census from commerce department and his voting preferences for stimulus package. Whatever it may be, atleast I am happy to read and witness a political scene where bipartisanship was momentarily displayed over governance.

Our Tamilnadu politicans are just capable of kindling emotions but fail to champion for a greater cause. They are interested in arranging bandhs, damaging public properties, making inflammatory speeches, conduct public meetings and rallies, self immolation etc and thus eventually causing public nuisance and irritation. Had I been a politican who emotes with innocent tamilian killings in Sri Lanka, I would collect funds, food and medicine and donate to Sri Lanka either through NGO's or through Indian government. I would personally visit Sri Lankan ministers and champion for the cause that I believe in. I would try to bring the attention of United Nations or United States (misnomer) and direct their attention to this genocide. PMK made DMK to Support Nuclear Cooperation with USA

DMK is supporting the ManMohan Singh Initiative of Nuclear Cooperation with USA. If we look deep into this issue, we would find that DMK has no other option other than to support Congress.

Turning the pages into TamilNadu politics, we find that DMK has removed the PMK from the coalition in the State government. The spinal cord of the government is the Congress support to the minority DMK government. If Congress withdraws, DMK loses its numbers to prove simple majority in the assembly (DMK should have 118 members inclusive of all support).

Rafael Nadal Wins French Open making to 28-0

Last night I went to bed at 2 AM in the morning but got up at 5:50 AM to watch Federer and Nadal clash for French Open title. History was at reckoning either for Federer or for Nadal. Federer would become 6th player to win all the major Grand slams had he won French open. Nadal would equal Bjorn Borg record of maintaining winning streak of 28-0 or fourth successive title had he won the French Open.

I would compare Federer to Lion for his pride and calm demeanor and Nadal to Tiger for his prowess, brutal force and tenacity. Right from the moment go, tiger was at its superior best. The Lion was mutilated and destr0yed in the encounter. The tiger was biting the French Open Trophy at the end of the day.

This news item brings in various topics for discussion:

Going in the reverse order, few newspapers appreciate the Governors act of Gandhigiri and other Left leaned newspapers just state it as a matter of fact without any turbulence. Personally I feel that this act of governor is commendable. If Kalam has established himself as People’s president, likewise, I would regard GKG as People’s governor. Be the Nandigram or the Power Crisis, he has dutifully questioned the acts of the state government.

This gubernatorial position is long criticized by many state governments that whether is this position necessary? Going back to the days of British Raj and trying to justify the concept of having a Governor is antediluvian. I personally feel that Governors should still be there as they are the watch dogs of the state government. They will bark when mischief happens. As adage goes, Barking dogs seldom bite. They cannot radically bring in any changes; however they are still potent in creating a threat and impact to the ruling party. This argument holds well as long as the chair of governor is unbiased.

With partisan politics played for all of these Constitutional positions, I feel that governor elected during a ruling party of state government would behave radically different when another party forms the government. This is based on the trend in most of the states where anti incumbency factor throws out the ruling party. This way atleast for some period during the term as Governor, he/she can be duty bound and hold aloft the constitutional principles.

To the question of Electricity shortage, my solution is two steps. Even if new technology for generating power explodes, I suggest the following steps:

Start turning off power supply when not required - ABSTAIN / RELINQUISH
Start living without power for at least 1 hour a day - ABSTINENCE

Karunanidhi initially making statements for Tamilnadu which was surprisingly supported by all parties. Then came the beautiful episode of Actors staging protest in Chepauk. Like everyone, I also enjoy my favourite stars coming to dias. I am a fanatic of Rajni.

With the DMK in power and Kalaignar TV fully telecasting the protest of Actors, Kalaignar TV wonderfully enticed the entire state to the TV sets and thus catapulting its TRP ratings.

The next preposterous move was on the next day after actors protest, Karunanidhi made a "STATESMAN LIKE" statement that it will start the conversation with Karnataka only when there is a responsible government in the state. By this way, Karunanidhi has just deferred the problem than solving for TamilNadu.

I am one among those 7 crore people in the state who wanted Rajni to be in politics. Had you watched Rajni speech on this water episode (http://youtube.com/watch?v=5cd4f6gJ9IM) and then retrospect with the events I summarised, you can identify the political acumen of Rajni.

With Karunanidhi deferring the problem, Kalaignar TV gained its money by telecast, stars making a mockery of themselves, whom to be blamed for this entire fiasco in the state? It is WE THE PEOPLE.

China hacking our External Affairs Ministry Servers and other sensitive Servers of India government is the recent headlines. What is more agonising to me is the audacious claim of lands of Arunachal Pradesh as Chinese mainland. The even more overwhelming news is the refusal to give Chinese Visa to an IAS officer who belongs to Arunachal Pradesh. The reason cited was that a Chinese Citizen from Arunachal Pradesh does not need visa to enter China.

If this kind of unequivocal treatment is rendered to India, why does India not display her strength or might? Are we going to be submissive just as the way we regarded recent crisis in Tibet as an internal matter to China ? Right from Rajeev Gandhi / Vajpayee / Manmohan Singh, everyone has made a definitive statement that Tibet belongs to China. Why is that Indian Government unable to make China concede to the fact that Arunachal Pradesh belongs to India.

After the nuclear armament of China, yesterday India test fired Agni III which can reach Shangai or Beijing. As a fast follower, Pakistan immediately tested the Raad Missile or Hatf VIII.

Costco , Sams Club or any other home departmental stores are curtailing the number of rice bags sold to their customer. Rice in Demand. Yesterday, George Bush has stated that India is responsible for this rice crisis.

Being a predominantly rice eater from my birth, I am loyalist to a particular brand of rice. Likewise, across globe, I understand that people are loyal to their brand.

In India, with surging Inflation (which ofcourse, is a double emphasis) to 7.75 %, the government is restricting the export on rice and pulses. This in way makes these commodities available to domestic market. Ofcourse, with burgeoning population, it is difficult to meet the demand. However because of export curbs, there is an increase in supply. This is the basis for UPA to check on price rise.

Indian diaspora is responsible for introducing Indian brands of food and commodities to the globe. With the world whet its appetite to Indian brands, it becomes difficult to meet the supply at all the times.

What it means to India ? India can temporarily gain on exports by increasing the price but in the long run, India might lose to any other Rice producing country, if the same quality or superior quality is found.

What it means in Stock Market ? If rice is traded in futures and options, it will be an interesting watch.

YVR has increased the CRR to 8.25 from 8%. CRR is the Cash Reserve Ratio that every bank has to maintain with the Reserve Bank of India. I thought that this is a much needed increase as every bank gives loan without doing credit check or the repaying capacity of the individual or the company. In such bad state of affairs in loan lending, it is wise decision to improve the strength of your liquidity. On the parallel, Infosys leads among all Software exporter companies in maintaining huge Cash in Hand. Even in our traditional grand mother way of budgeting for the family, we had the practise of having a reserve cash in the kitty.

Movie with/on Children

This blog is written after I watched Taree Zameen Par. A wonderful film. Those are very simple words to describe the movie. Movie made with/on children is difficult ordeal and Aamir Khan has proved his excellence. He has silenced many of empty rhetoric of Shah Rukh Khan. This blog is not intended to strike a rife between Aamir or Shah Rukh. It is about my change in attitude on movies made with/on Children.

I was a school going kid (probably 6th std) when I saw the movie Anjali made by Mani Ratnam. What a movie it was. I was really impressed with Baby Shamili who gave a memorable performance. I enjoyed the movie for songs, mischiefs and star cast. I do not think I have seen this movie for a while.

During my college days, I saw Kannathil Muthamittal made by Mani Ratnam. I had seen this movie atleast twenty times. Once again, excellent performance by Keerthana. I was able to appreciate this movie as it beautifully portrayted the complex relationship between a mother and a foster daughter.

During my graduate days, I saw the movie To Kill a Mocking Bird and read the book of Harper Lee. Once again excellent performance by the kid. I was able to appreciate the movie or book for the social issues of racial inequality it portrayed.

Now, today I saw this movie TZP. Now, in my life, I have been blessed with a daughter. When I see this movie through an eyes of parent, it brings total different perspective of todays issues in raising the children.

I have to simply resign to the fact that few things cannot be explained and have to be experienced. And of course opinions do change as time passes.

In the mandate given by Karanataka, every political party has formed the government and assigned a Chief Minister. Dharam Singh, Kumaraswamy and Yeddyurappa.

What are the other parties that got atleast one seat in this election ?Every party can form a government and everyone can become the Chief Minister of the state. Beware, dont talk aloud, Deva Gowda is hearing. He does not want Karnataka to be a laboratory of Power sharing exercises. Dont tell anyone, if you have blessing of Deva Gowda, you can also become the Chief Minister.

Governor - Rameshwar Thakur - Had you delayed the government formation of BJP fearing the Deva Gowda desertion of power, then I would think, you are a Pragmatic Governor. Had you played your Power game just to thwart the BJP attempt of ruling the state, then you are also another seperate team in this Power sharing exercise. Already we have JD, BJP and Congress as 3 teams elligible for this exercise.

What leaves Karnataka behind? Ofcourse the people and the state
What moves forward? Only the time.
What increases ? Wealth of Politicians
What decreases ? The time for the next election.

I was wondering what could happen when all polticians come together for swindling money ! Right now they disguise themselves into the so called ethics and principles of political parties, they belong to.

With the exponential rate of degeneration in politics and politicians, the time is so near that all politicians, sans political ethics that are held namesake, will come together to swindle the entire wealth of the state. How different are they from Ghajni Mahmud or Ahmed Shah Abdali or British Raj?

Even when these people unite to swindle, there could still be wealth sharing problems among them. May be they can adapt to ideologies like All politicians are equal but some are more equal than others.

Why this ODI series not interesting ?

Come on, you have state of emergency in Pakistan and you want the players to play a competitive cricket....It is really tough ordeal when you do not know how your family members are....The entire country is paralysed with restrictive information sneaking out of it....

You have to give credit to Pakistani players...You cannot boast about Indian team, Dhoni's leadership or availability of different options of forming playing eleven....

The other CPI led by Bardhan has started raising voices against the civil war torn state. For BJP and TC - what else can you expect and other than opposing an establishment...Congress are using its cards for their nuclear impasse..Already P. DasMunshi has expressed his opinion...On top of this, there is our Gopal Gandhi who has criticised the manner of handling...

Whom you can blame ? Left, Maoists, insurgents, landless farmer, TC...who can be blamed....If you start questioning them, nobody will take any responsibility or ownership....Just pointing fingers at others is the best thing to do...and No doubt politicians are great at it...

My friend had written a blog saying "Shame on you, Kolkata". After all, why be Left behind, when you can instead be right?I have always wondered why Left has to prevail in a democratic nation. Their idea of communism in democracy does not go well with me. As a history buff, I hate the partisan politics that they did at the time of Indian independence. Nehru in his ideal thoughts fostered communism as he thought they will prove a constructive opposition to the Congress at the parliament. However Rajaji thought Communism is no worth and annihilated communism in Tamil Nadu. Forgetting the events happened half a century back, if you look back after the events of collapse of USSR, you have found no nation following Communism. However our leaders are so fond of Communism that the politburo goes back to the books of Karl marx and Lenin to see the society they visualised in early 18th and 19th centuries and advocate the same in 21st century. If West Bengal beckons FII in its state, Left cries foul whenever the word "Foreign" is uttered in Manmohan Singh government. Just to recollect Cho Ramaswamy words spoke in Calcutta, " If Left has future in India, India has no future left".

How many times do you think that meteorological department had given the correct weather forecasts? I am not trying to demean the work that they are involved at, yet I am trying to convey that whenever there are forecasts, vagaries are bound to be present. If weather is predicted based on some formations and patterns from regional historical data, why cannot the people also take in astrology too? Astrology is a study of position of planets at one’s birth and the predictions are arrived from the influence of these planets that are arrived from studying combinations present in historical data. Is astrology been neglected because the founding fathers are Indians? Why are we trying to accept the theories that are propounded by Europeans or Americans? Why are our traditional medical sciences like Naturopathy, Homeopathy, Unani and Siddha seeing a decline? The side effects of allopathic treatment are very conspicuous, yet our indigenous medical sciences could not replace the allopathic system. How many of our Indian allopathic doctors appreciate our medical sciences and suggest these as an alternative to allopathic system as and when possible? The whole point is that we should not neglect something just because it is old and incomprehensible. And more importantly we should not neglect something that is Indian and that belongs to India.

After so much of discussions that went about Ganguly’s inclusion in Indian cricket team, it is time for me to opine. I am not going to talk for or against Ganguly, I am going to talk about the sport CRICKET itself. Having followed cricket keenly for more than two decades, it is time for me to propose the idea of abandoning the sport in this nation. The following are my findings that lead me to this idea:

Ganguly’s chapter has reopened the partisan politics in India. West Bengal was trying to identify from the Rest of India. It has led India from a nation to nations of nations. When there is TADA or POTA against the individuals, should not there be a legislation that disrupts the unity of nation?
There is so much of money involved in this game that politicians find another competitive arena to swindle money.
The player’s endorsements are embarrassingly high that sport players do not get motivated to win the prize money.
Apart from the endorsements there is so much of betting rackets involving the players who trivialize the spirit of competition in this sport.

The advantages that would come from abandoning this sport are:

There would be no BCCI and the concept of 1 vote for an individual would be restored in this democratic nation. Not anyone would have forgotten the BCCI election in which Jagmohan Dalmiya casted 4 votes.
Bureaucrats can have their peaceful retirement life. Raghavan or TS Krishnamurthy need not bother about bettings or elections anymore.
Dance girls can simply concentrate on their bar activities. Of all the problems that accrue in their bars, one crucial problem of betting can now be eliminated.
Zee TV can channelise their energy in other areas and they do not go to court anymore before advent of any match played in India.
External affairs ministry need not issue statements anymore whenever India goes to play against Pakistan.
To voice our moral policing politicians, children get too much addicted to this sport that they start deifying cricketers. May be whenever cricket or cricketers are shown, a marquee displaying “Watching cricket consumes lot of time which may ruin one’s career” can be avoided.

I am reading your book " The World is Flat". The book is very interesting talking of the new orders in the globalised world. It is an excellent compendium of latest technologies presented to layman. However I found some Information about India misquoted in the book. When you write of the 5th reason that flattened the world, you mentioned that " In short, India is country with virtually no natural resources that got very good at doing one thing - mining the brains of its own people by educating a relatively large slice of its elites in the sciences, engineering and medicine".

I disagree with your statement that India lacks natural resources. India is abundant in its coal resources, iron, mica, sugracane etc and etc. I could enlist several areas where India is plenty in its resources not excluding geothermal, tidal and other non conventional sources of energy.

I think this is not the first time where I met Incorrect representation about India. Way back in August 2002, in one of the editorials in New York times, I read about India averting a war with Pakistan primarily because of the American intervention who had their investments floating in India. I would like to concede to you that this is just an American way of viewing International affairs and lacks representation of Indian and Pakistani views. If India has to cowed down by American intervention it would have gone to submission when America imposed sanctions after Pokhran nuclear blasts.

The entire world knew how India coped up inspite of the sanctions. The entire world bears a testimony about the growth of India when all roaring economies of Asian tigers bursted in the last decade.

I strongly request you to consider the political appropriateness of the statements when uttered.

For several decades politics has become a full time profession to all our leaders. Most of them coming from penury background had made riches in this field. It admits people from different strata. You be a bandit, a convict, selling arracks....It does not differentiate. Politics is an equal opportunity employer. The more dignified you are, lesser are your chances. Nevertheless, you need not worry about this too. This profession will transform you. Brighter are your chances if you are a hypocrite.

The curse of being sensible and powerless is to see the ruins created by these adversary politicians. The politicians who are our tall leaders too have a selfless motive of usurping people's money to their families and generations. I strongly urge the industrialists to make a foray into this profession. Even if they swindle they will do to the benefits of their industries. As a result there would be an employment, infrastructure and better growth in the concerned industries. I agree to the development with corruption than stagnation with corruption.

The stagnation of water in Ambattur, Velachery and Medavakam has proved the basic flaws existing in city planning. Proper embankments for water bodies and good flood water drainage systems are the need of hour. While laying tar roads, care should be taken to allow rain water to percolate into the ground. The above said precautions should be taken in the low lying areas which are the badly affected during rains. It is high time that authorities learned not to build houses on the dried water bodies. I rented Fahrenheit 9/11 DVD. I could not complete the documentary film on 9/11. It is not the tragedy of 9/11 that made me abandon the film. It is the distasteful presentation and mockery at US President which made me do so. May be what all Michael Moore wanted to tell could be true , but I feel Truth too has to be presented in a manner appealing to the audience.

Will you believe this? The first post I posted in this blogspace has not got published. My first publishing in this blogspace is my second post. The second post of mine is going to be the first in the blogspace.

Google has missed my first posting when they had their downtime. As a lesser mortal, I thought my post would get published after the downtime. Eventually it did not turn up to be that way.

Like any other blogger ,I would write only when I acquire my muse. Check more on this space to see what I am writting.
